The Caldecott Medal

The Caldecott Medal annually recognizes the preceding year's most distinguished American picture book for children. It is considered one of the most prestigious American children's book awards. Beside the Caldecott Medal, the committee awards a variable number of citations to runner-ups they deem worthy, called Caldecott Honor Books.  The first Caldecott Medal was awarded in 1938.

The Newbery Medal

The Newbery Award is given annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.  It is considered on the of the most prestigious awards for children's awards in the United States.  The committee also awards a various number of citations to leading contenders, called Newbery Honor Books.  The Newbery Award was first given in 1922.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award

The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is given annually, recognizing the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the previous year.  Runner-ups are named Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Books.  The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award was first given in 2006.

The Coretta Scott King Book Award

The Coretta Scott King Book Award, named for Coretta Scott King, the wife of Martin Luther King, Jr., is awarded annually and recognizes outstanding books for young adults and children by African Americans that reflect the African-American experience.  Awards are given to both authors and illustrators.  The first Coretta Scott King Award was given in 1970.

Schneider Family Book Award

The Schneider Family Book Award recognizes authors and illustrators for the excellence of portrayal of the disability experience in literature for youth.  Awards are given to the following categories: Young Children, Middle School, and Teen.  The first Schneider Family Book Award was given in 2004.

The Prairie Bud Children's Award is determined by kindergarten through second grade students throughout the state of South Dakota.  Children can vote after each book read.  For this award, they vote yes or no on whether or not they think the book should win the award.  The first Prairie Bud Award was given in 1999.

South Dakota Prairie Bloom Award

The Prairie Bloom Children's Award is chosen by second and third grade students throughout the state of South Dakota.  Children can vote after each book read.  For this award, they vote yes or no on whether or not they think the book should win the award.  The first Prairie Bloom Award was given during the 2016-2017 school year.

South Dakota Prairie Pasque Award

The Prairie Pasque Children's Award is determined by fourth and fifth grade students throughout the state of South Dakota.  Students are encouraged to read and vote on the master list of 10 titles, ranking the books out of 3 stars.  Students can vote only for books they have read.  The first Prairie Pasque Award was given in 1988.
