Renewing an InterLibrary Loan

If you would like to request a renewal for your InterLibrary Loan, email library@dwu.edu.

Library staff will submit your renewal request to the lending library. If the request is approved by the lending library we will inform you of the new due date. If the renewal request is denied by the lending library you will need to return the item so we can ship it back to the lending library.

What is an InterLibrary Loan?

InterLibrary Loan (ILL) is the sharing of library materials worldwide. If you need a resource that McGovern Library does not have or that is currently checked out we try to get it for you!

Physical items that you request will be sent to our library and will be available for you to pick up. Articles and book chapters are typically received electronically and will be sent to your email account as PDFs.

InterLibrary Loan services are available to Dakota Wesleyan University Students, Faculty, and Staff.  If you are a Mitchell Public Library user or outside user, you will need to request an InterLibrary Loan through your home public library.

Requesting Materials Through InterLibrary Loan

InterLibrary Loan requests are made through either the Library Catalog or an Academic Database. Below are the steps for requesting materials through InterLibrary Loan.

Requesting Items Through the Library Catalog

  1. Using the Library Catalog, conduct a search.
  2. Under "Held By Library" (located on the left-side of the screen), check the box next to "Libraries Worldwide".
    • This will search all materials including items not owned by McGovern Library.

  1. If the text "Held by other libraries worldwide" is shown, McGovern Library does not own the item. You will need to request the item through InterLibrary Loan.

  1. Click on the title to open the record.
  2. Under the "Check Availability" section of the record, scroll down to "Libraries Worldwide".
  3. Click on the "Request Item through InterLibrary Loan" button.

  1. Fill out the form provided.
    • If you are a Distance Student, type in Distance Student in the comment box. This informs the library that the material will need to be mailed to you.
    • You will need to provide your Barcode number located on your student ID card. This is different than your Student ID Number.
  2. You will be informed via email when your item arrives at McGovern Library.

Requesting Items Through an Academic Database

  1. Searching from a database selected from the Database List, conduct a search.
  2. Open up the article or book chapter you would like to access.
    • If the library does not own the item, you will not be able to access a PDF or HTML Full Text.
    • A message of "Check for full-text availability" or something similar will be shown.
  3. Click on "Request through ILL" or "Request this item".
    • Depending on the Database you are searching within, the phrasing will change.

  1. Fill out the form provided.
    • If you are a Distance Student, type in Distance Student in the comment box. This informs the library that the material will need to be mailed to you.
    • In the "Library Card #" box, enter your Barcode number located on your student ID card. This is different than your Student ID Number.

As a Distance Student, you have access to all materials and services available through McGovern Library.
