What are Commentaries?

A commentary is a "collection of chapter-by-chapter or verse-by-verse explanations of either a portion or the whole of Scripture. Commentaries may be written by individual scholars, who are commonly assigned, based on their interests and expertise, to write on a particular book." - David R. Stewart, The Literature of Theology

Commentaries may be published as a single volume or as a series.

Search Tips

Searching Bible Commentaries

  • Looking for a Matthew commentary? Use bible commentaries matthew (as subject or keywords) when searching the Library Catalog.
  • Limit your results to Books under "Format" in the left column of filtering options.
  • Sort results by "newest first" to ensure more recent scholarship.

Locate other forms of biblical scholarship (e.g. monographs, edited volumes) on your book by adding "interpretation" or "criticism" in place of "commentaries"

Looking for a non-western commentary? Try some form of the following search strategy:

  • (africa* OR india* OR asia* OR global) AND bible commentaries
    • Copy and paste this search into the Library Catalog's search box (modify if necessary)
