Associations and Societies

Ecological Society of America

The Ecological Society of America promotes ecological science by improving communication among ecologists; raises the public’s level of awareness of the importance of ecological science; increases the resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and ensures the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making by enhancing communication between the ecological community and policy-makers.


Society for Conservation Biology 

The Society for Conservation Biology is a non-profit, organization dedicated to facilitating, promoting, and advancing the scientific study and conservation of biological diversity.


American Ornithological Society 

The American Ornithological Society is a diverse, global network of empowered professionals, working together to advance the scientific study and conservation of birds.


The Wildlife Society 

The organization’s mission is “To inspire, empower, and enable wildlife professionals to sustain wildlife populations and habitats through science-based management and conservation.” 


Society for Range Management 

The Society for Range Management is the professional scientific society and conservation organization whose members are concerned with studying, conserving, managing and sustaining the varied resources of the rangelands which comprise nearly half the land in the world. 


American Fisheries Society 

The American Fisheries Society is the world’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to strengthening the fisheries profession, advancing fisheries science, and conserving fisheries resources.


Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies 

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies represents North America's fish and wildlife agencies to advance sound, science-based management and conservation of fish and wildlife and their habitats in the public interest.


American Society of Mammalogists 

The ASM is currently composed of around 2,500 members, many of whom are professional scientists. Members of the Society have always had a strong interest in the public good, and this is reflected in their involvement in providing information for public policy, resources management, conservation, and education.

South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks 

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks provides sustainable outdoor recreational opportunities through responsible management of our state's parks, fisheries and wildlife by fostering partnerships, cultivating stewardship and safely connecting people with the outdoors.


South Dakota Department of Agriculture: Conservation & Forestry 

Part of the Department of Agriculture, the Conservation and Forestry department provides resources and conservation to South Dakota's forests, forest industries, and cropland. 


United States Fish & Wildlife Service 

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. They are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.


United States Geological Survey 

The USGA provides science about the natural hazards that threaten lives and livelihoods; the water, energy, minerals, and other natural resources we rely on; the health of our ecosystems and environment; and the impacts of climate and land-use change. Scientists develop new methods and tools to supply timely, relevant, and useful information about the Earth and its processes.


USGA Unified Interior Regions: Missouri Basin 

Our Region includes Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. We conduct science to inform resource managers on issues such as invasive species, water quality/quantity, flood response, oil and gas, and restoration of fish/wildlife and their habitats.


Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center

Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center is one of 17 USGS Science Centers, each with a unique focal area of expertise. The mission of NPWRC is to provide the scientific information needed to conserve and manage the Nation’s natural capital for current and future generations, with an emphasis on migratory birds, Department of the Interior trust resources, and ecosystems of the Nation’s interior. 


Dakota Water Science Center

The Dakota Water Science Center conducts basic hydrologic data collection and scientific investigations in North and South Dakota, including modeling and characterization of climate, surface water, groundwater, and water quality. 


United States Department of the Interior: Bureau of Land Management 

The mission of the BLM is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.


Bureau of Land Management: Fish and Wildlife

The BLM's Division of Fish and Wildlife Conservation provides national leadership to promote restoration, enhancement, and protection of fish, wildlife, and invertebrate species and their habitats.  This includes supporting a diversity of fish, wildlife and plants, including threatened, endangered, “at risk”, migratory, and game species. 


Global Rangelands: Rangelands West

The Rangelands West and Global Rangelands portals and database provide public and private land managers, researchers, Extension professionals, educators, and the public in the U.S. and worldwide with the information and tools they need for sustainable management of rangelands, informed decision-making, professional enhancement, and educational activities.


United States Environmental Protection Agency 

The mission of EPA is to protect human health and the environment. They work to ensure that: Americans have clean air, land and water; National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific information; Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced fairly, effectively and as Congress intended; Environmental stewardship is integral to U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy; All parts of society--communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments--have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks; Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and revitalized; and Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety.
